This week’s news post comes a little early due to the PS4’s launch. Happy launch day, by the way! After this post, the PS4 content starts flowing!
OK, we knew it had to be coming, but tonight Naughty Dog officially announced that they are working on the next Uncharted exclusively for the PS4! They didn’t specifically name it Uncharted 4, which is curious, but I’m calling it that for now, because it’s the 4th game in the Uncharted (console) series. Not much is revealed. Next to nothing, really, but there is a teaser trailer:
Wow. Who could that character possibly be? He’s got to be talking to Nathan Drake, but why does Nate owe him? Interesting to note that near the end of the teaser the Latin phrase, “hodie mecum eris in paradiso”, is featured around a skull and cross bones. I thought it sounded familiar and it turns out that it is Jesus Christ’s last words on Earth: “today you will be with Me in paradise”. I can’t even guess how that relates to Uncharted.
Are you guys as excited as I am for new Uncharted?!
The Last of Us DLC: Left Behind
Tonight, Naughty Dog also revealed the first story DLC for The Last of Us. It’s called Left Behind and the player character is Ellie!
Check out the teaser trailer:
Now, here’s some more info about the DLC straight from Naughty Dog on the PS Blog:
“The Last of Us: Left Behind is Naughty Dog’s first ever single-player DLC. Bruce, Neil, and the rest of the team are getting close to wrapping work on this new campaign, which will meet the quality and gameplay what you’ve come to expect with The Last of Us, along with a few surprises.
She’s back! Ashley Johnson reprises her role as Ellie in The Last of Us: Left Behind single-player DLC. Left Behindtakes place while Ellie is attending a military boarding school in the Boston quarantine zone, prior to meeting Joel and the events in the main campaign of The Last of Us.
In just a few short months since the release of The Last of Us, you have made it clear that Ellie has become one of your favorite characters in games. Today, we’re excited to confirm that you play as Ellie throughout the entirety of Left Behind.
Joining Ellie on this new adventure is Riley, her best friend and also a mentor of sorts at the military boarding school. Just as The Last of Us focused on the bond between Ellie and Joel, Left Behind explores the bond between Ellie and Riley through a series of events that will forever change both of their lives.
Bringing Riley to life through our performance capture process is the talented Yaani King, who we had the pleasure of working with on the DLC.
If you just can’t wait until the DLC drops to get more of The Last of Us, go out immediately and read the Dark Horsecomic series, The Last of Us: American Dreams – which is conveniently available in the recently released paperback collection. I cannot recommend this series enough and it’s even more relevant now, as in the comic you will learn more about how Ellie and Riley first became friends, giving you even more insight into Ellie’s story in The Last of Us universe. And it’s also just plain great!
The Last of Us: Left Behind will be releasing in early 2014 – we will announce a specific date as soon as we iron out all the details. The awesome news is that Left Behind is included in the The Last of Us Season Pass, which also includes a ton of multiplayer DLC, and is the best deal you can get for all the DLC content we’ve planned to release – over 75% worth of savings compared to buying all the DLC separately. If you’re only interested in the single-player DLC, you can pre-order it starting November 19 on the PlayStation Store for $14.99.”
I knew the second I saw Riley looking at the merry go round that this was going to be based on American Dreams, which was a really good companion comic series to The Last of Us. I really wasn’t expecting them to go this route, but I think it should be a really cool story to play out. I’m also excited about playing more as Ellie. Playing as her in the main game was possibly the toughest part of the game, but a lot of fun too. If I remember correctly, you had to get good at stealth or you were dead.
I reviewed all of the American Dreams comics this summer and they can be found at this link: http://stephenwrhodes.com/tag/the-last-of-us/
Activision and Bungie had a couple things to share about Destiny at the PS4 Launch PS4 launch show.
First, they had a new trailer to show off:
They also had some news to share regarding the beta for Destiny. The beta will be coming to the PS4 before any other console:
“In celebration of the launch of the PlayStation 4, Bungie is pleased to announce that the Destiny beta will be available first on the PS4 and PS3!
Fans who pre-order Destiny at participating retailers worldwide will receive their Beta redemption code while supplies last. To see a list of participating retailers, fans can visithttp://www.destinythegame.com/wheretobuy. Upon pre-ordering the game at a participating retailer, players will need to visit http://bungie.net/beta and follow the instructions on the page to secure their spot in the Beta. The required 9-digit entry code will be printed on their receipt or on a flyer distributed at time of purchase, or sent via email through their respective retail rewards program. Fans that pre-ordered before October 1, 2013 and qualify for this offer are automatically entered into the Beta and will receive their entry code from their retailer via email. All questions or concerns related to the Beta code should be brought to the attention of the retailer.
The Destiny Beta will include a diverse sampling of major activities in the full game, and will begin in 2014 on all four announced platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360.”
Neither announcement is particularly exciting or hype-worthy to me, but I still think Destiny looks like an awesome game that I look forward to playing on the PS4!
Heroes of Dragon Age
Next up, I’ve got some Dragon Age news! Unfortunately it’s not Inquisition news, though I do hear there is a pre-alpha gameplay video out there, but I’m avoiding it. I don’t like spoilers. No, this news regards Heroes of Dragon Age, the upcoming mobile game. The teaser trailer is up and a release date is supposed to be coming soon:
I don’t usually like mobile games, but this is Dragon Age, so I plan to at least give it a shot!
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Bioware has a new trailer up for their upcoming expansion pack to The Old Republic, Galactic Starfighter:
I’ve been having fun with The Old Republic, even if I have been neglecting it the past month or so. I’m not sure if I’m interested in Galactic Starfighter. I enjoy the space battles with my Corellian Corvette, but I just don’t see myself doing PVP battles with starfighters. I can see how it would appeal to a lot of people, though.
Bioshock Infinite DLC, Burial at Sea: Episode One
Bioshock Infinite‘s first story DLC, Burial at Sea: Episode One came out this week and Irrational Games has a launch trailer that you can watch here:
If you haven’t played it yet, you need to! You can find my review of it here: http://stephenwrhodes.com/2013/11/14/review-burial-at-sea-dlc-episode-one/
BEYOND: Two Souls
In other DLC news, the BEYOND: Two Souls‘ DLC, Advanced Experiments, that was originally a Gamestop Exclusive, is now available for everyone to download on the PlayStation Network for $5.
PSN describes the DLC as:
“Test your rapid problem-solving skills as you guide Jodie Holmes and the mysterious entity Aiden through a series of tough training missions. Devised by leading officials at the Department of Paranormal Activities, this training exercise will determine if you are able to use your brain while keeping an ice-cool head in high-pressure situations.”
Advanced Experiments sounds alright, but it’s not enticing enough to get me back into the game right now to try it. I do hope that Quantic Dream has more DLC coming, though!
Grand Theft Auto Online
Besides the technical difficulties, it seems as if Rockstar has been doing really well with GTA Online. A new and free update pack is already coming next week: The Beach Bum Pack.
Check out the press release:
“Get ready to tear up the coast and kick up some sand with the free Grand Theft Auto Online Beach Bum update that will be coming next week Tuesday November 19th. All the new Beach Bum content will be added automatically to GTA Online through our next title update (1.06), and will include two new weapons, a quartet of rugged and fun new vehicles for land and sea, lots of new action-packed Jobs, plus a wide variety of suitably rad new apparel, hairstyle and tattoo customization options. Read on for more details.
The Beach Bum update will bring a slew of new action-packed Jobs to GTA Online next week. These include new beach-themed Races, Deathmatches, Parachutes, Last Team Standings, Survivals as well as Gang Attacks for those who enjoy a good territorial skirmish.
Better not kick sand in the wrong face. Beach blankets may run red by the time the sun sets on Vespucci.
Here are just a few of our favorite new ones that are on the way:
- “Grass Route II” (Race): In this sequel to the original popular Grass Route Race, go off-road in an epic heat starting on the North bank of the Zancudo River through the treacherous wetlands with a triumphant finish on the beach in North Chumash.
- “Survival on Del Perro Pier” (Survival): Skip the ferris wheel for a deadlier kind of thrill ride as you take on waves of relentless enemies at this beachfront attraction.
- “View of Vespucci” (Parachuting): This leap sends you from 2,980 feet, down towards Vespucci Beach, weaving through palm trees to land on the basketball courts of the rec center. If you’ve got skills, it’s possible to freefall through the first few checkpoints before even opening your chute.
- “Paleto Beach” (Team Deathmatch): The locals complain that not a lot happens in this sleepy town, so do them a favor and wake ’em up with a barrage of gunfire exchanged between you and a rival team. This Team Deathmatch takes place right on the romantic shoreline for 4-8 players.
- “Sundae Driving” (Bike Race): Sure to be a new fan-favorite motorbike race, menace Vespucci Beach on your two-wheel rocket, taking breakneck corners as you try and best the competition.
Expect these and lots more Jobs to be added to Grand Theft Auto Online next week.
Hit the shore with four sand-and-surf-ready vehicles perfect to take on the all new Beach Bum Races and Vehicle Deathmatches: the BF Bifta dune buggy, the rugged Canis Kalahari off-road truck, the Bravado Paradise beach camper van and making a special return to the GTA series, the fast and stylish Speeder speedboat. All four vehicles will be available at no in-game cost, with the land-based vehicles accessible from the southernsanandreassuperautos.com website and the Speeder available via docktease.com on your in-game phone (call Pegasus for delivery). These vehicles are also available in Story Mode for Michael, Trevor and Franklin to enjoy – to access them, visit your garage property and the Marina property for the vehicles and the boat respectively.
Take to the seas and waterways in the classic, nimble Speeder.
Expand your arsenal with two new free weapons – the compact yet deadly SNS Pistol and the brutal new Broken Bottle melee weapon which is quite effective at delivering the appropriate message in up close and personal encounters. Each weapon will be available gratis from any Ammu-Nation location in GTA Online and will be added straight into each of the three characters’ inventory in Story Mode.
Beach bums with attitude. Hit the coast with all new customization options to style up your GTA Online character.
New Customization Options
You’ll be able to deck out your GTA Online character with all new beach-ready customization options including stylish board shorts, neon surfer attire, wild tribal tattoos, shaggy hair for that West Coast laissez-faire vibe and more…
This is just the first of many new content updates we’re working on for Grand Theft Auto Online in the weeks and months ahead. Please stay tuned here at the Newswire for word on the forthcoming Content Creator, full on cooperative Heists, and GTA Online’s take on Capture the Flag – plus info on some exciting new Story Mode updates as well. We’ll have new info to share on all of this very soon.”
I’ve still been too busy with other things to try GTA Online out, but that sounds like a pretty good update to me.

The Image Expo sounds cool, but I wont’ be able to make it. I thought some of y’all might be interested, especially if you live close enough that a visit would be feasible.
Call of Duty: Ghosts
Something that I didn’t mention in my review of Call of Duty: Ghosts (which you can read here: http://stephenwrhodes.com/2013/11/12/review-call-of-duty-ghosts-ps3/), is that there is also a companion app for the game. That seems to be the current fad for games, doesn’t it?
“The new Call of Duty app adds a new dimension to Call of Duty: Ghosts multiplayer by allowing fans to stay connected to the game on the go, and offers new features like Second Screen functionality and the all-new Call of Duty® Clan Wars metagame, to create an even greater experience.”
I have downloaded this app, but I haven’t tried it yet. It seems to me that it is more geared towards the really hardcore multiplayer fans of the game. I enjoy the multiplayer, just not as much as some people do.
Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor
WB Games announced an interesting new Lord of the Rings game this week with a unique concept: Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. In the game, you basically play as a Ranger turned Vigilante Ring Wraith.
“London, UK – Nov. 12, 2013 – Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor , a next-generation, third-person action game set in Middle-earth that explores an original story of vengeance and redemption. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is in development for PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment systems, Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, the Xbox 360 games and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC.
In Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, gamers take on the role of Talion, a valiant ranger whose family is slain in front of him the night Sauron and his army return to Mordor, moments before his own life is taken. Resurrected by a Spirit of vengeance and empowered with Wraith abilities, Talion ventures into Mordor and vows to destroy those who have wronged him. Through the course of his personal vendetta, Talion uncovers the truth of the Spirit that compels him, learns the origins of the Rings of Power and ultimately confronts his true nemesis.
“In Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, players will explore the dark and very personal theme of vengeance in a world where decisions have a consequence, and those consequences persist even after death,” said Samantha Ryan, Senior Vice President, Production and Development, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “The game introduces new gameplay mechanics to the action genre, creating opportunities for emergent and customized gameplay that will be rewarding for players.”
Every enemy that players face is a unique individual, differentiated by their personality, strengths and weaknesses. Through the Nemesis System, enemy relationships and characteristics are shaped by player actions and decisions to create personal archenemies that remember and adapt to the player and are distinct to every gameplay session. Gamers are able to craft their own battles, enemies and rewards within the dynamic world that remembers and adapts to their choices, delivering a unique experience to every player.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is under development by Monolith Productions. The team has collaborated with Middle-earth Enterprises, Peter Jackson and the artists at Weta Workshop to ensure that the settings, characters and story align authentically within canon. For more information, visit <gp_link type=”http” loc=”//www.ShadowofMordor.com”>www.ShadowofMordor.com, Facebook.com/ShadowofMordor and Twitter.com/Middleearthgame.”
I’m not entirely sure that I like the premise of the game or not, but I can’t judge anything based on a paragraph. As a Lord of the Rings fan, I’ll be keeping an eye on this one.
What do y’all think of the premise of this game?
Focus Home Interactive has announced the release dates for Contrast on all consoles and released a launch trailer for the game.

I’m looking forward to this game! I plan to do a dual PS3/PS4 review, likely sometime next week.
Sony has released another trailer for RESOGUN. This time, it’s a trailer focused on “Levels”:
I haven’t decided if I’m going to write a review for RESOGUN, but I am definitely going to try it out.
Killzone: Shadow Fall
There are a couple of new Killzone: Shadow Fall trailers to share today.
The first trailer is a “Tech Trailer”:
The other trailer is the “Launch Trailer”:
Shadow Fall looks visually stunning. It may be one of the best looking games I’ve ever seen, at least judging by trailers. I plan on reviewing it second after Madden NFL 25, though nothing is concrete yet.
I’ve got several news items to share regarding PlayStation, as you might imagine.
The first is about another companion app, but this is one I’m actually really interested in: the PlayStation App for iOS and Android.
Here’s what the App can do, according to Euro Gamer, where I believe the news first broke:
“The App offers a shrunk-down version of the main PS4 interface, allowing you to access a mobile version of the PlayStation 4’s social feed where friends’ recent gameplay exploits are detailed. You can also send and receive text and voice messages, multiplayer game invites and set purchased PlayStation Store content downloading. By hitting the ‘Connect to PS4’ button you can enable the App’s second-screen features, for use with games such as PS4 launch title Knack and bundled AR software The Playroom.”
I downloaded the PlayStation App today, and while I haven’t been able to try out the PS4 stuff yet, I have found the other functions to be really cool. Even if you only have the PS3 for now, I would recommend checking this app out!
Another item to share is a video trailer for PlayStation Plus:
There’s not anything new there, but it might be a good video to reference for newbies to the PlayStation.
Sony released a 9 minute long video tonight that showcases the new PS4 user interface:
I started to watch this and then I realized that I’m going to see it for myself in mere hours and so I’d rather just discover it for myself. It seemed like it was going to be a nice, in-depth look at the UI, though, if you are interested.
I wanted to end this week’s news post with an update on my extra life fundraiser. Awhile back I told y’all that I wanted to join in with the Extra Life bandwagon and give back through an extra life marathon/fundraiser. The problem was that I couldn’t figure out how to stream the PS3 without buying new hardware. As of later tonight I will have a PS4 that has that capability through Twitch. Problem solved. I also wanted more time to raise money. While Extra Life Day has already come and gone, people can still raise money until the end of the year. Other problem solved! So, tentatively, here’s what I have planned: a 12 hour session very soon to start the fundraiser and 12 hour session to end it in a few weeks. Those that have already done their Extra Life marathon, do you have any tips for me? Does that plan sound like a good one?
Here’s my page (though I haven’t done anything to it yet): http://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donordrive.participant&participantID=87607
