Wii Mini

Wii-mini-3 (1)

Earlier this week, Nintendo announced that they would be releasing a new version of the Wii called the Wii Mini. It’s only $100 and seems like a great deal.

Press Release:

“REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– The Wii console was a cultural phenomenon when it was released to the world in 2006. To continue this legacy and share the fun with as many people as possible, Nintendo is launching the Wii miniconsole in the U.S. at a suggested retail price of only $99.99. That is a tremendous value for families and people who have yet to join one of the most iconic and talked-about pop-culture trends of the last decade. Wii mini is a smaller, redesigned version of Wii that plays the entire library of more than 1,300 Wii games. The compact system is matte black with a red border, and comes with the Mario Kart Wii game, a red Wii Remote Plus controller and a red Nunchuk controller. While availability will differ somewhat according to location, shoppers can expect to see Wii mini in stores by the middle of November.

“Wii mini offers the same fun experience as Wii, which has been enjoyed by millions of people around the world,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “And it comes packaged with Mario Kart Wii, a multiplayer Mario racing game that is one of the best-selling Wii games. At such a great price, it is an extraordinary value for shoppers this holiday season.”

Wii is the best-selling system of this generation with more than 100 million units sold globally. Wii mini is for those who don’t own a Wii console and want to enjoy a ton of great Wii games on a stylish system at an affordable price. It is also for families who want an additional console in another room, allowing siblings and friends to play while the rest of the family enjoys other entertainment and games on the main living room TV screen. While Wii mini is not compatible with the Internet and will not allow online functionality when playing games, select multiplayer games can still be played locally with friends and families, which is the ideal way to enjoy such entertaining games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii.

As a companion to the Wii mini system, a large collection of Nintendo Selects Wii games is available at a suggested retail price of only $19.99 each. These games include modern classics like Super Mario GalaxyThe Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Super Paper Mario. In addition, three newly discounted Wii games – Super Mario Galaxy 2New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Wii Sports Resort – are also available at a suggested retail price of $29.99 each. With an existing, extensive library of classic games available at such low prices, Wii mini demonstrates the value and variety Nintendo is offering this holiday season.

Like I said, the Wii Mini seems like a great deal. Unlike the Wii U so far, the Wii has an amazing library of games to choose from. I’m particularly fond of the Zelda games. If you never tried the Wii out before, this seems like a good time to.

PlayStation Vita

The PlayStation Vita was updated on Monday. The primary purpose of the update, 3.00, is to prepare it for PS4 connectivity. For more info on that and the other features in the update, check out this video:

Sony released another video showcasing the PS4 connectivity and how it works:

Pretty cool stuff! I look forward to testing the PS4 connectivity out next week!

PlayStation 4

As y’all can imagine, with this being the week leading up the launch of the PS4, there is a lot of hype building up. There are also lots of videos and news stories popping up.

The first video up is a showcase of the games that are coming to the PS4 at launch or in the near future. This is in the same series of videos as the last video that covered PS4 connectivity to the PS Vita.

Nothing new there, but it’s a good trailer, particularly for those who might not be familiar with what’s available on the PS4. Next up is the “Epic Journey” trailer, with devs talking up the PS4:

This is another nice trailer, but nothing very new for most of us. The next video focuses on the Dualshock 4 controller:

The last PS4 video for today is only 8 seconds long and is just an announcement of their live launch event:

“Join PlayStation and Spike TV for the live PS4 All Access: Greatness Awaits launch event! We’ll be live in New York City on November 14th starting at 11:00pm. Tune in to see exclusive world premieres and announcements about the PS4 games that will define 2014 and beyond. Tune in on Spike TV, UStream, or the PlayStation.Blog.”

I may or may not be watching. All I know for sure about my Thursday night is that I will be at Wal-Mart picking up my PS4!

To wrap up the PS4 coverage for today, a news story from the PS Blog:

“After months of anticipation, we’re just a week away from the launch of PlayStation 4 in the United States and Canada. Starting at midnight on November 15th, you’ll be able to see for yourself what the future of gaming and entertainment looks like.

Look for the voucher when you open your PS4 box and let us know what you’re excited about playing, listening, or watching by using #PS4 on Twitter.”

What a nice surprise! I already know what I’m going to use my $10 credit for: upgrading my Call of Duty: Ghosts to PS4!

Mass Effect 4

In celebration of N7 Day this past Thursday, Bioware paid homage to the past and gave hope for the future in a set of tweets throughout their network of employees. The Bioware storify put the story together (imagine that) for us:

I hope that worked, if not, you can find it here:

As you can see, there were a few teases for Mass Effect 4 there at the end. I couldn’t really discern what they were really. I think one image had a character looking at some bacta tank type thing. Another looked like a playable Quarian. IGN did an analysis video on the images here: Their guesses are as good as yours or mine, but they did a good job. If nothing else, they did some high quality zooming in on the pictures, which was cool.

What do you guys see in those images?

It’s funny how excited I can get over 4 blurry twitter pictures!

The other item of note regarding Mass Effect is not pertaining to the next game. It regards the three we have already played. In a video that I think IGN put together, the voices of Mass Effect thank the fans for being fans. It’s very, very cool. All Mass Effect fans need to check it out.

Man, I love Mass Effect.

Call of Duty: Ghosts

My review of Call of Duty: Ghosts is still coming this weekend, so stay tuned for that, but for now I have a couple items to share of note.

First, Activision announced that Ghosts has already made $1 billion so far:

“Santa Monica, CA – November 6, 2013 – Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), announced today that the company sold more than $1 billion of Call of Duty®: Ghosts into retail stores worldwide as of day one.

Call of Duty is by far the largest console franchise of this generation,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “More people have played Call of Duty this year than ever before, logging four billion hours of gameplay. And in the last 12 months,Call of Duty®: Black Ops II, including its digital content, generated more revenues than any other console game ever has in a single year. Although it is too early to assess sell-through for Call of Duty: Ghosts, it’s launching at a time when the franchise has never been more popular.”

Millions of people are already playing Call of Duty: Ghosts online. Since its release yesterday, Call of Duty: Ghosts has moved to the #1 spot as the most played game on Xbox Live, according to Microsoft. Additionally, Activision confirmed that on the Xbox 360 videogames and entertainment system from Microsoft, average player sessions forGhosts have been longer than either Black Ops II or Call of Duty®:Modern Warfare® 3, during the same time period.

Call of Duty: Ghosts launched at 15,000 midnight openings around the world. Fans around the world shared their excitement in social media, with Call of Duty-related terms trending an astounding 20 times globally on Twitter in the last 24 hours.

Ghosts is an amazing game which ushers in the next generation of Call of Duty. The team at Infinity Ward has delivered yet another epic thrill ride in the campaign, and what I think is our best multiplayer game yet,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. “This is the must have launch title for the next generation of consoles, and we expect Call of Duty: Ghosts to be the most successful launch title for the Xbox One and PS4 by a wide margin. In fact, according to GameStop, Call of Duty: Ghosts is their most pre-reserved next gen title.””

Congrats to them on that accomplishment! The next news item is fairly timely. Activision announced a double XP weekend on Ghosts:

“To celebrate the launch of Call of Duty®: Ghosts, we’re turning on our Launch Double XP Weekend tomorrow. From Friday, November 8th (10am/PST) through Monday, November 11th(10am/PST), players on all platforms will earn twice the amount of XP on all of their Multiplayer actions.

For more information, head over to our Double XP Launch Weekend FAQ.”

I’ll be playing some more multiplayer tomorrow (technically today, Sunday) before I finish my review. If you want to play with me or against me, add me on PSN. My ID is “heycheckthisout”.

Grand Theft Auto Online

Just a quick couple of news stories for GTA Online.

The first is regarding update 1.05:

“The newest automatic title update for GTA Online is now available for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. As mentioned previously, this update addresses some residual issues where occasionally people’s vehicles or vehicle modifications were disappearing due to a cloud save failure – as well as the other fixes mentioned below:

  • Built in measures to prevent users from losing their progress when there is a cloud outage
  • Built in a number of measures to protect players’ cash balances even if there are network problems
  • Fixed an issue where on rare occasions during network problems the player could lose their Online vehicle or mods after exiting GTA Online

Of course, if you’re still experiencing any other technical problems, please visit our support website to contact our support team and subscribe to the GTA Online Launch Status article. You can also shoot us a quick message at theRockstar Support Twitter.

We also encourage you to send any constructive gameplay feedback you have to us at our <gp_link type=”mailto” loc=””> address, as we continue to monitor it for all the latest suggestions for tweaking and improving the experience of GTA Online.
On a related note, we anticipate the GTA$ Stimulus to be distributed in the next couple of days following this Title Update. The Stimulus will go out over the course of a full day once it’s initiated so don’t be alarmed if people on your friends list receive it before or later than you do. Enjoy and we certainly appreciate your patience and understanding as we sort out these remaining issues.”

The second release is about the stimulus package:

“Attention all Grand Theft Auto Online players, we have begun the Stimulus Package direct deposit into each of your in-game bank accounts. This GTA$500,000 deposit applies to all GTA Online players in the month of October 2013.

We expect that it will take up to 2 full days for the Stimulus Package to be fully delivered to the entire player base from October 2013, so please be patient if you do not see it appearing in your in-game bank account just yet. We will update this post on Friday when we expect all the GTA$ Stimulus Package deposits to have been completed.

Thanks go out to everyone for their continued patience and understanding while we worked through these issues, and we can’t wait to bring more into the world of GTA Online. On that note, stay tuned for more details on the Beach Bum update soon along with upcoming Social Club event announcements and more here at the Newswire.”

I still haven’t jumped back into GTA Online after my failed attempt to play on launch day and I’m not sure when I will. I’ve just been too busy.

Killzone: Shadow Fall

I have a couple of videos to share for Killzone: Shadow Fall.

The first is the live action trailer, that you may have already seen on TV this week:

The other video contains “ultra high bitrate multiplayer footage”. You’ll have to download it from PS Blog to view it, though. If it’s something that you’d be interested, then it’s definitely worth a look. It looks damn sharp! I hope all games look this sharp on the PS4!

MLB 14 The Show

MLB 13 PS3

Sony has released a teaser trailer for MLB 14 The Show focusing on how the PS4 makes it’s series better. It’s pretty cool, take a look:

Madden NFL 25

Madden PS4

Much like the majority of the videos I’m sharing today, this video focuses on how Madden 25 will look and operate on the PS4:

I’ve been more of a NCAA Football player the past few years, but with that series ending, Madden should become my primary sports game again. It looks damn good on the PS4 and I just might have to pick up a copy!

Just a quick video for Knack. It’s the 2-player co-op multiplayer trailer:

It’s hard for me to put this trailer into context, because I haven’t paid close enough attention to all of the Knack coverage. I don’t know if this a separate experience from the single player mode or if it’s the same thing, but with 2 players. Hopefully I’ll find out soon enough!

Sony released a couple of new videos for RESOGUN.

The first is a quick look at the “Worlds of RESOGUN“:

The other video is a look behind the scenes of RESOGUN:

I don’t quite get the hype for RESOGUN. I suppose it’s just not the type of game I would typically play or get excited about. However, I will be checking it out thanks to it being free on PS Plus.

Wrapping up the news post, I’ll leave you with one last item. The Bethesda Store now has Vault Tec bobbleheads and they are awesome. You can see them above and find them here:

What did you guys think of my news coverage this week? Anything stick out to you? Did I miss anything big that you were excited or upset about? Let me know in the comments!

In case you missed it, I have a new monthly poll up on the sidebar, but you can vote here too:

Still coming this weekend: The Hedge Knight graphic novel review, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag review, Call of Duty: Ghosts review, and FPS Freek Phantom review.

Coming up next week: The Walking Dead #116 review, full PS4 coverage. I get my PS4 on Thursday night, so don’t expect much until Friday. I want to get StephenRhodesTV (on YouTube) and Twich involved in my coverage, but I haven’t really made my plans yet. I’ll be doing a hardware review and game reviews, but I don’t know which games yet. Stay tuned!

    • Yeah, I remember them saying that they don’t want to call it Mass Effect 4, but for now we don’t really have a better name for it. I think a prequel is more likely too, but I think a sequel is possible too. The problem with the sequel, though, is that the different endings are so different. If you picked synthesis, that’s pretty dang different from the other two options. I guess they’d have to skip ahead a hundred years or something and just pick an ending? I don’t know. I’m like you, though. I’d prefer a sequel, rather than a prequel, if I had my choice. Think of all the things we did to change and save the universe as Shepherd. I would love to see a future where the long term effects of those changes are seen. That being said, I’ll be excited for pretty much anything that they come out with…

      • I think the destroy ending would be canon because the other two endings just isn’t Shepard. Like in Mass Effect 2 they went with the Kill the council ending from part 1.

      • That’s what I would guess too. Definitely the most Shepard-like choice of the three.

What do you mean about killing the council being canon, though? It wasn’t that way for me. It asked me if I saved them or didn’t when I first played it on PS3, before the trilogy version came out. Maybe it was different for different versions?

      • The PS3 version isn’t the original Mass Effect 2. Before they added in that interactive comic the council always died if you’ve never played Mass Effect before.
